Zhang, Bai-Xia Gu, Hao Guo, Hong-Ling Ma, Li Wang, Yun Qiao, Yan-JiangĪt present, studies on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) properties are mostly restricted to a single or two kinds of medicinal properties, but deviated from the holism of the theoretical system of TCMs. We also conducted experiments on models and the meridians were shown in final reconstructed images. The conductivity distributions were compared with different current injections, along the meridian channel and channels around respectively. The model was solved using Finite Element Method (FEM) and dynamic image was reconstructed using truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) regularization method. Current was injected in the direction perpendicular to the cross-section where eight electrodes were equally placed around the surface of the forearm for the voltage measurements. A simplified three dimensional (3D) mathematical model of the forearm developed. Based on this knowledge, we proposed using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to visualize the meridians of human being. It has been proven that the resistance along the meridian channels is lower compared to other paths. In Chinese medicine, the meridians are channels along which the energy of the psychological system is considered to flow. There is no physically verifiable anatomical or histological basis for the existence of meridians.

The channel is called low hydraulic resistance channel (LHRC) and the chemical transport is named volume transmission (VT). People in China and abroad had been working hard for 50 years, trying to understand the meridians then 15 years ago a breakthrough idea appeared when we realized that they are low resistance fluid channels where various chemical and physical transports take place. If we do not understand the meridians, it is hard to understand the TCM. It gives an integral explanation for how human life works, how a disease forms, and how a therapy acts to treat a disease.
